Vestibular apparatus: dynamic model of the semicircular canals
نویسندگان
چکیده
The vestibular apparatus plays a fundamental role in equilibrioception. It is located in the inner ear and it substantially comprises otoliths, which indicate linear acceleration, and semicircular canals, which detect rotational acceleration. In this paper models of different complexity of the semicircular canals are reported and discussed: a monocanal hydro-elastic model and a three-canals model, in which interactions between canals are considered. Different trends are obtained by implementing the two models in a Matlab environment. The numerical results of the monocanal model are compared with the classical torsion-pendulum model and with literature data; while, for the three-canals model, responses to angular velocity directed parallel to the physiological axes are reported.

A Study on Physical Factors Stimulating the Semicircular Canals Receptors (Cupola)
SUMMARY Although sciences and techniques have been significantly developed, many patients are still suffering from diagnostic and therapeutic problems of vestibular system, specially vertigo. Perhaps, these problems are not solved yet mostly because the neurophysiology of vestibular system and the stimulation mechanisms of the receptors are not known. This difficulty, intum, causes some a mbig...
متن کاملVestibular Modulation of Sympathetic Nerve Activity to Muscle and Skin in Humans
We review the existence of vestibulosympathetic reflexes in humans. While several methods to activate the human vestibular apparatus have been used, galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) is a means of selectively modulating vestibular afferent activity via electrodes over the mastoid processes, causing robust vestibular illusions of side-to-side movement. Sinusoidal GVS (sGVS) causes partial en...
متن کاملInfluence of vestibular activation on respiration in humans.
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of the semicircular canals and otolith organs on respiration in humans. On the basis of animal studies, we hypothesized that vestibular activation would elicit a vestibulorespiratory reflex. To test this hypothesis, respiratory measures, arterial blood pressure, and heart rate were measured during engagement of semicircular canals and/or ot...
متن کاملHair Cells
Hair cells are specialized sensory epithelial cells found in the inner ear (Figure1a). Inmammals, the inner ear contains the coiled cochlea as well as the vestibular apparatus, which includes two otolith organs (the utricle and the saccule) and three semicircular canals. The cochlea and the components of the vestibular apparatus are interconnected by fluid-filled tubes that are circular and con...
متن کاملMultisensory Integration and Internal Models for Sensing Gravity Effects in Primates
Gravity is crucial for spatial perception, postural equilibrium, and movement generation. The vestibular apparatus is the main sensory system involved in monitoring gravity. Hair cells in the vestibular maculae respond to gravitoinertial forces, but they cannot distinguish between linear accelerations and changes of head orientation relative to gravity. The brain deals with this sensory ambigui...
